How do these CSR efforts link to the attached Economist article?

This paper examines the Corporate Social Responsibility efforts of HSBC to the environment, people and community.

HSBC is one company that believes long term success and good corporate behavior are linked. Thus CSR has been an important and essential ingredient in HSBC’s 140 years of success.

HSBC manages environmental issues as part of their business. It is helping to tackle climate changes by being the first major bank to go carbon neutral with its Carbon Management Plan. The plan consists of three parts: to manage and reduce their direct emissions, to reduce carbon intensity of electricity they use by buying ‘green electricity’ where feasible and to offset remaining emissions in order to achieve carbon neutrality. As at December 2005, HSBC has reduced its overall energy usage by 5%, thereby reducing its carbon dioxide emissions from energy use. This is due to improvements in carbon management practices, investigating use of renewable resources and use of energy-efficient and cost-saving equipment. (HSBC Environment targets section, para. 1) HSBC also showed a reduction of 1% in their water consumption at year-end 2005 through initiatives like installing switch-off devices, improving operations in water management and better control of cooling towers. (HSBC Environment targets section, para. 2)The environmental regulation and information disclosure by the company can benefit them to a large extent, as the company march their way to Product Stewardship, the second stage of development of green management process. Though these policies lower the economic efficiency of the business by increasing its cost, resulting in lower profits, it gives them a comparative advantage to other businesses in the same industry. By reducing pollution and operating with greater energy efficient, it can reap significant cost savings. The cultivation in the vision of sustainability can help HSBC adopt sophisticated strategic planning to allow their top managers assess the full range of the firm’s effect on the environment. These planning can thus help the company foresee new markets, materials and technology.

HSBC embraces diversity. It employs people from different cultures; different points of views on disciplines as they think that their diversity profile at all levels of the business should reflect that of their customers. It believes that having respect for all people inspires loyalty in both employees and customers. (HSBC Embracing diversity section, para. 1)Their commitment to diversity starts from its board of directors as it has three female directors, more than most of the world’s leading companies. In addition, one principle HSBC holds is fair pay to its employees, where the pay and promotion is based on individual performance and capabilities. It shares the benefits of its success through performance-related bonuses in most regions and the extension of share ownership. About half of all HSBC employees now participate in one or more of HSBC’s employee share plans. (HSBC Pay and reward section, para. 2)

By having diversity practices, HSBC has a strategic advantage because it is able to attract and retain talented workers from all backgrounds, serve a diverse customer base and avoid expensive lawsuits and public embarrassment. Having a fair pay policy helps persuade and encourage its employees that there is ‘distributive justice within the company’, as pay and promotion is due to meritocracy. Though these efforts create a fairer level of playing field, HSBC should continue to improve and maintain its policies as discrimination will always be on the list. Health and safety issues should also be taken seriously with the death of one worker in its workplace in 2005 (HSBC Health and safety section, para. 7) so as to be socially responsible to its stakeholders and weigh off the argument that that a firm places more responsibility on business rather than individuals.

HSBC takes importance in nurturing talent by providing the young talented people with scholarships. In United States of America, a US$1 million grant was given to the United Negro College Fund/HSBC Corporate Scholars Program to provide students with funding for college tuition as well as paid summer internships at HSBC offices in the US. (HSBC, 2005) HSBC’s employees also contribute back to the society through volunteering and fund raising. One example can be seen from HSBC Singapore's Senior Management Team climbing Southeast Asia's highest peak Mount Kinabalu to raise a total of over SGD 450,000 for needy schoolchildren in Singapore. (HSBC employees in the community section, para. 7) Lastly, HSBC engages its stakeholders like customers, investors and suppliers through forums, surveys and feedbacks to gain more insights for improvement and to understand the expectations people have on its business and CSR. (HSBC, 2005)

Community involvement, philanthropic contributions and engagement with stakeholders help to cement the loyalty of employees, customers and employees. They also help enhance its reputation and show its ability to respond quickly to changing stakeholders demand. The CSR efforts put in is very beneficial as needy people receive hope through this help, while firms got to build its social capital and show its strong stakeholder engagement in a proactive way. Dense social network increase productivity by reducing the costs in business, as company and people are more likely to trust one another. The development of social capital produces a win-win outcome as everyone becomes better off.

Overall the CSR efforts HSBC puts in may be due to the influence it possesses. Thus it may feel obliged to the iron law of responsibility, where it believes that responsibility must accompany with power. Otherwise, it may lose the power. By committing in social responsibility, social initiatives by business can promote long-term business profits. These can be seen in the donation it gives to the United Negro College Fund/HSBC Corporate Scholars Program above-mentioned. This ‘corporate gift’ though costly in the present, might in time provide a flow of talented graduates to work for the company. The CSR efforts also help to improve its business values and the firm’s reputation. The social reputation of the firm is an important factor in building trust with its stakeholders. It prompts consumers to come back to do business with them, attract and retain employees to spur productivity and enhance profitability. Thus the reputation with respect to the CSR efforts put in is positive. And this is why companies view CSR so importantly. This goes in accordance with the Economist article (2005) that states “businesses certainly need to take account of other interested parties if they are to succeed as businesses: they must satisfy their customers, get on with their suppliers, motivate their workers, and so forth.”

Yet, the CSR efforts HSBC invests in may not be fruitful. As it uses its resources for social purposes, it risks lowering efficiency. This is because those resources could have been put into better use in other important areas that could increase the efficiency of the company. By pursuing social goals, the firm deprives society of important goods and services, and the higher levels of economic production needed to maintain everyone’s standard of living. The low efficiency may thus induce higher cost, resulting in lower profits and returns in investment. This will make it more difficult for the firm to acquire additional capital for future growth. In the long run, the company’s CSR efforts may backfire.

The article also argues against CSR efforts. It feels that a proper business of business is business. Committing in CSR may give rise to confusion over business ethics and what the managers’ responsibilities are. Managers are employed by the company to maximize long-term value of the owners’ asset. The CSR efforts shown meant that assets of the owners are put into other uses. This means cheating the owners and is unethical. Thus managers should not concern themselves with the public good as they are not competent to do it and may lack the democratic credentials for it. (Anonymous, 2005) So if they are to manage those social responsibilities, which are not within their professional capacity, with office work, other than being unethical, it may result in lower efficiency of business. Hence it feels that it is the government that should be accountable to all citizens. It is their jobs to deal with economic and social problems. (Anonymous, 2005) So the CSR efforts should be left to other groups in society and business should stick strictly to making profits.

Though there are lots of criticisms against CSR by firms, HSBC has been a good corporate citizen, showing its responsibility to the environment, people and community. However, there are still rooms for improvement and these can be achieved together with the help of its stakeholders and its enlightened self-interest.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://looneychoony.blogspot.com/2007/05/describe-and-analyze-csr-efforts-of.html' title='Describe and analyze CSR efforts of a company that you can freely choose. He argues because of limited resources, tragedy of commons and no true world government to control reproduction and use of available resources, we should govern our actions by the ethics of lifeboat.

The main argument is as follows:
1. If we have limited resources, then we should govern our actions by ethics of lifeboat and not share our resources.
2. We have limited resources.
C3> We should govern our actions by ethics of lifeboat and not share our resources.
4. Since we should govern our actions by ethics of lifeboat and not share resources, the poor will suffer if we do not help them.
5. Lifeboat ethic advocates that we should not help the poor.
C6> We should not help the poor.
The above argument looks valid. So let us examine whether the premises are sound.

In premise 1, this premise is argued for under ‘Adrift in a Moral Sea’. Assuming a lifeboat with an excess capacity of 10 more passengers, those in the boat should assess whether they should admit 10 more people to it if the excess capacity acts as a safety factor. Its argument is as follows:
1. If we have no one on the lifeboat, then we have safety factor.
2. If we have safety factor, then there will not be disastrous outcome.
C3> If we have no one on the life boat, then there will not be disastrous outcome.
C4> If we have no one on the life boat, then survival is possible.
5. If survival is not possible by undermining the disastrous outcomes from the unforeseen circumstances with excess passengers, then the boat will sink.
6. If the boat sinks, then we should not aid the poor in the waters.
C7> If survival is not possible by undermining the disastrous outcomes from the unforeseen circumstances with excess passengers, then we should not help the poor.
8. Survival may not be possible by undermining the disastrous outcomes from the unforeseen circumstances with excess passengers.
C9> We should not help the poor.
It follows that this sub-argument supports the main argument. This argument is valid due to its argument form DS and MP. Indeed the ‘safety factor’ is an important factor on the lifeboat and if we were to admit more people on the boat, survival may not be possible. Therefore this sub-argument is sound.

In ‘Population Control the Crude Way, it is reconstructed as follows:
1. If the poor can always draw on a World Food Bank in times of need, their population can continue to grow unchecked.
2. If population continues to grow unchecked, their need for aid will also increase.
C3> If the poor can always draw on a World Food Bank in times of need, their need for aid will also increase.
4. If need for aid increases, the World Food Bank will have less resources.
C5> If the poor can always draw on a World Food Bank in times of need, the World Food Bank will have fewer resources.
C6> We should not help the poor.
This sub-argument supports the main argument. The argument is valid. However, there is an assumption to premise (4) that the poor will take and give nothing in return, which is not true. As from the article, the poor will give by being cheap labor and there will be political gains between countries, hence resulting in a charity gain. There is another assumption that giving more aid will increase more people, thus increasing the needs for more aid. But this may not be true. Once giving the poor the food, they can go look for a job rather than waiting for food. By looking for a job and earn money, they will be richer. If they are richer, they will require less need. Thus increasing the aid does not mean increasing the need for aid. In addition, Premise (1) may not be true such that when population is high, it will grow unchecked. It makes no sense that we know reproduction of rich is still lower than poor countries. With the poor receiving more aid, they will become wealthier. When a country becomes wealthier, it does not mean that the state of reproduction will stay at same rate. Yet, reproduction of rich is still lower than poor countries. Therefore the higher rate in population does not equal to an increase in need for aid. The argument is unsound.

In Immigration vs Food Supply, it is argued for:
1. Immigrants consist of the poor.
2. Immigration is supported.
3. If the primary interest to support unimpeded immigration is the desire of employers for cheap labor, we should close the door to immigrants.
4. Foreigners were brought in to work at wretched job with wretched pay.
C5> We should close the doors of immigrants.
C6> We should not help the poor.
Though the argument is valid, this argument does not really link back to the main argument. This argument talks about not helping the poor because of the poor conditions they’ll be in if immigration is not allowed. It does not talk about anything near to the lifeboat ethics. Moreover, the premises (3) and (4) in this argument have some flaws and seem to commit the fallacy of argument against the person by appeal to explanation. Premise (4) is questionable. We do not really know whether foreigners or immigrants were cheap labor, working in a state of bad job conditions. Therefore this argument is unsound.

In Premise 4, this premise is argued for under ‘Population control the Crude Way’. It argues that:
1. The proportion of people in rich and poor countries will stabilize and less poor will suffer only if we aid the poor through the system of food sharing.
2. The growth differential between the rich and poor countries continues to increase.
C3> We should not aid the poor.
In this sub-argument, it supports the main argument. The argument is valid as from the argument form. Yet, this argument does not seem sound. (1) may not be true. Even with some system of food sharing or foreign-aid programs to the poor countries, the rate of population between the rich and poor countries still continue to increase, with a worse ratio each year. So if this premise is false, then this entire sub-argument becomes unsound.

Under ‘Learning the Hard Way’, it says that even though we aid the poor, the poor will still suffer unless they learn from experience and mend their ways. In other words it means that the poor will not suffer only if they learn from experience and mend their ways. Learning from experience and mending their ways means that poor countries should not be dependent on other countries to help them. Therefore for the poor not to suffer, we should not help them. This sub-argument supports the main conclusion. Yet this sub-argument seems to contradict with the Premise (4) in the main argument. Here the sub-argument says that ‘If we do not help the poor, they will benefit’ whereas in the Premise (4) of main argument, it says that ‘If we do not help the poor, they will suffer’. These two statements seem to contradict. If the sub-argument’s one is true, then Premise (4) of main argument is false. If the premise of main argument is false, then the main argument is invalid.

In conclusion, Hardin’s argument is invalid and unsound. His 1st premise is challenged to be untrue and is unsound by weaknesses and fallacies like argument against person by appeal to explanation. His 4th premise has been proven untrue and unsound. So most of the sub-arguments are rendered unsound though its first sub-argument of survival in the lifeboat is possible if we don’t help the poor is sound. Hence, the support for lifeboat ethics is not very strong to prove that we should not help the poor.

Confounding the myths of Creativity within me

I always thought that creativity is defined as a mental process involving the generation of new ideas or concepts, or new associations between existing ideas or concepts (Wikipedia, n.d.) or otherwise, like most creativity theorists will endorse (Mayer, 1999) is that creativity is “the ability to produce work that is novel (i.e. original, unexpected), high in quality and appropriate (i.e. useful, meets task constraints)” (Sternberg, Kaufman, & Pretz, 2002) It was not until the first day of my Creative Thinking class, a sentence which my lecturer, Margaret Chan, said, shook me up. She said: “There is no one definition for creativity.”

Time and again, Margaret had stood firm that there is no one definition on creativity, ideas has to be worked for and that creativity can be nurtured. This has prompted me to reflect over the myths, my thoughts and perspectives on creativity. So what is my take on the above issues? After much thoughts and readings from various sources, I believe that being creative does not mean ideas that come out have to be original, being creative does not mean that one does not have to work for ideas and that creativity can be nurtured.

Like most people, I agree that creativity involves originality. Thus, I felt that idea that comes out have to be original, new and refreshing, something one has not seen before, and then can it be considered creative. But I was wrong. Mark A. Runco states that though creativity involves originality, it does not imply that creativity is merely a kind of originality; originality is necessary but not sufficient for creativity. (Sternberg, Grigorenko, & Singer, 2004) Moreover, originality needs to be defined carefully, just like creativity. Therefore, we cannot assume that being creative means being original, vice versa. Jean Baitaillion once wrote, “Really we create nothing. We merely plagiarize nature.” (Leboeuf, 1996) It sounds quite true. New and revised books are a rearrangement of words, sentences and concepts. New knowledge is built on fundamental basics. Hence, it shows that every idea is a duplicate or built-on of an old idea. The late Dale Carnegie who is accredited with creating ideas that has enabled many people to live happier, more successful and productive has summarized his creativity this way: “The ideas I stand for are not mine. I borrowed them from Socrates. I swiped them from Chesterfield. I stole them from Jesus. And I put them in a book. If you don’t like their rules, whose would you use?” (Leboeuf, 1996) Thus, no ideas are our own and nothing one creates is original.

I used to think that creative ideas different from other forms of thinking and are very precious as they are like flashes of brilliance that will only appear out of the blue. Thus, it is not possible and we do not have to work for ideas. Yet this is true only to a fortunate few. One has to be at the right place at the right time. However, Leboeuf (1996) mentioned that the problem with this myth is that if we believe, nothing will happen. Flashes of brilliance come to those who work for them. Magical insights and solutions are sometimes stumbled on, but most of these solutions are chanced on by people who happen to be studying the problem. (Leboeuf, 1996) Perhaps, most of us have underestimated ourselves and have overestimated the unusual or special aspect of creative work. This matter of degree could have resulted in us immobilizing ourselves from trying. Therefore, ideas are not like magic. One has to work for it. Otherwise, procrastination may be the right term for those waiting to be inspired.

Though it is known that creativity is a universally distributed human trait, I once felt that not everyone can be creative. I felt that only a gifted minority are creative. Especially with Singapore’s education system or culture that taught us to accept whatever the adults say and not to rebut since young, I strongly felt that our creative potentials that we could have developed is not unready to be unleashed but has diminished over the years to the extent that it is hard to be nurtured. Furthermore, Sternberg, Grigorenko and Singer (2004) have stated that “creativity training programs…are bound to yield limited effects on the development of creativity.” At that time, I felt that unless one has that inborn and gifted talent, he or she is more likely to be creative as compared to a normal child.

However, coming to SMU have changed my perspective on creativity. Once again, I begin to feel that creativity can be nurtured. Unlike the UK-type system, SMU adopts the US system; where students have to participate actively in discussions, raise questions whenever in doubts and to look for the professors and Teaching Assistants on their own if they have further enquiries. This system prevents the breeding of comfy and conformity that we are used to in our 12 years of education. So, the verbalization of thoughts and participation in discussions can help in formation of new ideas. And that’s why we are having creative thinking classes – to nurture, encourage and celebrate differences, with old taboos removed and new exciting activities introduced. Thus, one need not necessarily be ‘talented’ to be creative. Creativity can be cultivated.

Myths are part and parcel of our lives. To let go of beliefs that we held for a long time is difficult. Yet, we should not let myths and our erroneous beliefs we harbor about creativity keep us from utilizing our creative potential. As Leboeuf (1996) remarked: “Change is tough but it’s a worthwhile investment in our growth.” As for me, given the guidance in creative thinking classes, I believe I’m on my way to confound the myths of creativity and unleash the Creative Genius within me.

Hydroelectric Power: A Suitable Replacement for Oil Energy?

Oil accounts for 40% of all energy use. (United States Geological Survey [USGS], 1998). Yet, before new oil can be discovered and extracted, the known reserves are depleting. About 6 billion barrels (Gb) of oil are discovered and 26Gb, which is four and half times as much, are consumed each year. (Fisker, 2006). Subsequently by 2015, about 100 million oil-equivalent barrels a day of new production have to be added into the industry to meet demand. With oil production declining at an average ratte of four to six percent a year, it is necessary to search for other sources of energy. (Thompson, 2003). Thus, scientists have been spending money to increase alternate energy sources like hydroelectric power. However, hydroelectric power is not a feasible alternative as it results in economical, environmental and social problems.

Economic problems will arise if hydroelectric power is to replace oil. Hydroelectric power dams are expensive to build. The high cost of construction means the dam must operate for decades to become profitable. One example is the Hoover Dam in United States of America. This dam costs 165 million dollars to build and it took 49 years to recover the cost. (Public Broadcasting Service, n.d.; Moore, 1999). This caused the economy to run a deficit as the huge amount of money could have been invested in other areas to boost the economy. In contrast, an oil well costs about 35 to 50 million dollars to construct. (Wikipedia, n.d.). Thus, a shorter time is required to recover the cost of building an oil well. This minimizes the losses incurred by the economy. It is also difficult for hydroelectric power to replace the amount of energy oil can produce. The world consumes energy produced by oil at a rate of five trillion watts (TW) each year. (Fisker, 2006). A hydro turbine only generates two giga watts. To generate as much energy oil can produce, 2500 similar hydro turbines have to be installed. (Wikipedia, n.d.). However, this is costly. Monetary reserves will be depleted and the economy will suffer. Hence, hydroelectric power is not a feasible alternative to oil as its high cost and inefficiency will cause the country to incur huge losses.

The environmental consequences of hydroelectric power are equal to or more serious than oil. Building of dams requires valleys to be flooded. However, flooding of valleys disruptsthe surrounding aquatic ecosystem and threatens the habitats. Of 3000 to 4000 remaining endangered Siberian Cranes, 95% will be destroyed by the Three Gorges Dam. (Wikipedia, n.d.). This shows that flooding land to build a hydroelectric dam can greatly endanger wildlife.

In addition, generating hydroelectric power impacts downstream river environment. Water exiting from turbines usually contains very little suspended sediment, which can lead to scouring of river beds and loss of river banks. In addition, since turbines are opened intermittently, the daily or rapid fluctuations of river flow worsens the erosion of river banks. In The Grand Canyon, daily cycle flow variation caused by Glen Canyon Dam was found contributing to erosion of sand bars. Instead, dykes are built to prevent sea-water from entering the oil fields and to minimize erosion of coastal beds. (Bunnet, 2002). Generation of hydroelectric dams may thus wipe off the river bank and disrupt the ecosystem.

Furthermore, the reservoirs of hydroelectric power plants may produce methane and carbon dioxide from rotting vegetation. According to the World Commission on Dams report, most reservoirs emit higher greenhouse gases than power plants running on fossil fuels. (Wikipedia, n.d.). Phillip Fearnside from Brazil's National Institute for Research supports this claim. He estimates that in 1990, emission of greenhouse gases from the Curua-Una dam in Brazil was more than three-and-a-half times what would have been produced by generating the same amount of electricity from oil. (Graham-Rowe, 2005). Therefore, the green image of hydroelectric power as a benign alternative to fossil fuels is false. Hence, hydroelectric energy is not a feasible alternative as it poses a greaer threaten to the environment than energy from oil.

Many social problems will arise if hydroelectric power is used as an alternative to energy from oil. People living near the valley to be flooded must move out, businesses and farms will be lost; historical and cultural sites will be destroyed. One example is the Clyde Dam in New Zealand. The dam flooded many houses and orchards upstream in Cromwell, forcing residents to move out. It also damaged the scenic Cromwell Bridge, a highlight of the then young but growing tourism industry. (Wikipedia, n.d.). Consequently, the tourism industry was hit. Many people were hence unemployed. On the other hand, oil plants are usually built far away from residental areas. Thus, people will not be greatly affected. Instead, the building of oil plants creates employment for them. Therefore, hydroelectric energy is not a feasible alternative as it creates greater social problems than energy from oil.

However, many people feel that water is more accessible than oil due to its availibility. So, they think hydroelectric energy may be a feasible alternative to energy from oil. Nevertheless, water is becoming scarcer in certain places, and its availibility is a major social and economic concern. (Wikipedia, n.d.). An example is the Aswan Dam in Egypt. After generating the dam for 20 years, the lake was only 40% full. (Bunnet, 2002). Moreover, about 15% of the water from Lake Nasser, a river that links to the Aswan Dam, is lost every year through evaporation and water leakage from dams. (Kent National Grid for learning [Kent NGfl], n.d.). This may diminish the power of river flow, thus resultiing in less energy being generated. Hence, the availibility of water will affect the generation of energy. On the contrary, oil can still be discovered. As oil gets scarcer, people will try to get it from less accessible places, such as the North Sea. In addition, Shell's Mr Van de Veer argues that big oil companies will soon be manufacturing 'greener fossil fuels'. (Manivannan, 2006). These assure that the accessibility and availibility of oil does not affect the generation of energy. In brief, hydroelectric power is not a feasible alternative to oil energy.

Despite the fact that oil is running out, hydroelectric power is not a feasible alternative. The economy, environment and population have to pay a high cost for the construction and running of a dam. This will thus result in inefficiency within the country. Development of energy sources has been ongoing to provide abundant and accessible energy. Yet, future energy development faces a great challenge due to exhaustion of fossil fuel. Unless a suitable alternative is found, energy from oil can never be replaced.

Why are creativity, innovation and continuous improvement important for a business to succeed and remain competitive?

Creativity, innovation and continuous improvement are crucial to long term business survival. They are fast becoming the key characteristics of successful and leading edge businesses and organizations over the world. As increasing numbers of foreign investors and multi-national companies enter to set up businesses in Singapore, it is necessary that Singaporean businesses develop cultures that foster creativity, innovation and continuous improvement to remain competitive. These three elements are important for a business to succeed and remain competitive because creativity creates a constant flow of new ideas to improve current operation, innovation helps in greater productivity in new markets and continuous improvement ensures companies constantly upgrade themselves so as to be on par with their rivals.

Creativity drives ideas and enables companies to think out of the box. This re-energizes a company and encourages progress. The flow of ideas also allows more hypotheses to experiment on, such that if one idea fails, one can still try to experiment on the other ideas until the best one emerges. This can thus lead the business to success and keep it competitive. Breadtalk, a local confectionary business shows this importance of creativity. It regularly comes out with different creative breads with unusual names to attract customers. This can be seen from the popular floss bread to bread with catching names like ‘couch potatoes’. It also brings the kitchen, which is usually at the back of the stall, to the front for people to view the bread-making process. The fresh and creative style has won the hearts of the consumers and made the business successful. As the market is competitive and replicas are rampant, it is important to stay creative so as to succeed and remain competitive.

Innovation turns ideas into useful products and services to sell to customers. Being innovative can also help one give a new twist to an old idea and provide one with plenty of problem solving techniques. Businesses can gain from the economic benefits of innovation, which include greater productivity and leadership in new markets. This ensures a competitive edge. The Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) experimented and implemented by the National Library Board is one successful example. The RFID, being the first such technology used in libraries in the world, helps to cut returning time for library loans. This means that borrowers need not wait for a long time before they can borrow the books they want. This shows that innovation helps in increasing the productivity of the business. In addition, if innovation is properly managed, it can produce higher rates of return than other form of businesses. It thus shows that innovation is important for a business to succeed and remain competitive.

Continuous improvement ensures a business to be constantly on par with its rival. That is why the Singapore government has been encouraging businesses to develop and take on Research & Development (R&D). Without continuous improvement, one will soon be overtaken by the others, no matter how established one is. The importance of continuous improvement can be shown in Creative Technology. Creative Technology’s Zen Portable Media has won many good reviews and was presented 2004 Best CES Award in USA when it was first launched. Though winning so many commendations, it did not remain at the same position. It continued to improve its technology and came up with the latest Zen Vision. It is an upgraded version of portable media player, which can play longer hours of music and videos and has longer battery life. The Zen Vision was even awarded the Red Dot Design award for superior design quality and innovation in Germany this year. Creative Technology has shown the importance of continuous upgrading so as to match its rivals and to always be on the competitive edge.

We are in the midst of a new revolution within the global economy. As we are rapidly moving from the ‘Knowledge economy’ to what is increasingly becoming the ‘Imagination economy’, it is important to foster creativity, innovation and continuous improvement for a business to succeed and remain competitive. Only then can current operations be improved, productivity be increased and competitiveness to be maintained.

What I think of the Gomez's incident in this election

In 6 more hours, the polls will start! Though I have not reached the legal age to vote, I can feel the heat already.

The nine days of rallies and pulling of votes had ended. Will the PAP triumph again? Will its winning increase as compared to last election? Will there be any surprise at the hot spots? Who knows? We will see for ourselves tomorrow.

As a Singaporean and non voter, I see that this election mainly surround over the Gomez's case. In my view, I feel that the PAP is making a fuss out of a molehill. No doubt that this could be one of their strategies. This can also be a question about our integrity system and the character of the candidates. However it shouldn't be regurgitating over this case for about 2/3 of the rally time they were given. Instead the candidates should focus on what they can provide and promise (upgrading? improved facilities for the senior citizens? ) for the people in their constituencies if they were voted.

Like what Workers' Party Mr Low Thia Kiang said: "We should move on."

Yes, we should move on and stop taking the Gomez's issue out to debate and argue during this crucial and limited time. The CCTVs in the Election Department has shown; the talks on between Gomez and the staff of the Election Department on the phone was broadcasted. The people and voters will know who to believe, who to trust and who they are going to entrust their future to. THEY are there to judge.

So in this case, I feel that the Gomez 's incident was just blown big. Perhaps this incident can be left to settle after the election. Whether it will be treated as a criminal case, let's wait for all to be settle today before we bring it out and argue again.

How to win alumni and donors

I refer to 7 April 2006 ST review 'How to win alumni and donors' , a speech by Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

I fully agree with 3 of the points he mentioned:

1."Students have to feel a sense of community and belonging to their school. It's too late to build alumni ties after the student has left."

2."...good communication with the alumni. It's really off-putting if the only communication an alumnus gets is a begging letter. If they feel part of the loop and are kept updated(on school development)...they're more likely to support causes in need of funds."

3."...administrations that are inflexible and rigid alienate students. Those with a student-oriented culture, that tries to understand their students' varied needs, wins support which translates into stronger ties."

After looking at these 3 points, I finally realise why my schools' alumni or maybe other alumni are finding quite difficult to gather and bring in more involvement of the alumnus. The crux lies in the 3 points mentioned above.

Usually when students are in school, we made them feel like they are just students, coming here to study. Schools must be able to make them feel belonged. Other than just announcing the results of zonal competition during assembly periods, we can get them involved in the planning and perhaps hands-on on upcoming school projects. The students can then feel that they have sort of contributed to the school, feel bonded and have something to reminisce when they leave the school.

Communication skills. Something that the school and the alumni can collaborate and do better. Being an alumnus myself, I always feel that the alumni is not doing enough. Maybe it is doing alot but in my eyes, they seem not to be doing much. As an alumnus, I hope to get updated news and development of the activities going on in the school, at least once every school term. However I was quite disappointed that this did not happen.(Everytime I have to go to the school's website to get the latest information.) Only when there are big events, like fund-raising or funfair in school then do I receive news through email. Recently, my secondary school held a small funfair. I was lucky to be informed through email by the alumni as I had signed up to be a member the year before. However as most of my previous schoolmates did not sign up with the alumni, they did not know there was such an event.Only a small proportion heard it by mouth. I was quite shock to hear that when I called my secondary school friend recently. Perhaps what the school can do is to update the contacts of their students every year and also before they leave the school. This can allow the school to update on their alumnus on the activities that are going on in school. Alumni can also build up contacts before the students leave. This may be able to solve the decreasing number of school-leavers joining the alumni. Together, the school and alumni can come together to create a e-newsletter, which they can send to their alumnus every term to keep them updated. These can make the alumnus feel that they are 'part of the loop' and not just receive 'begging letters' that put them off. Fundraising can thus be made easier and effective.

Sometimes school administration maybe rigid. This could have stop students from implementing new ideas or activities that can brighten up or benefit the school. Now the student council in the school will then have to come in. Why are these student councillors chosen or voted for? They represent the student bodies and voices. Student council can be made more amiable. Instead of placing a suggestion box outside the room, they can try to listen to what their peers' needs and then bring it up in their meeting. If the idea is possible, put it into action. If they meet into difficulties, pull in the alumni. They are there to help since they represent the student bodies too. Proposals can be quite tricky to handle and be rejected by the school administration for upteem times. However if the idea is finally processed and is accepted, the labour that they put in will be worthwhile. Students maybe even grateful to the voices responded. This will help to win support from students and therefore win alumni as the students see that they have a place to voice their opinions.

Hmmm...maybe i will raise these 3 points in the next alumni meeting.(Another point to take note:It's been a year since the alumni has a meeting)

"If you or your loved ones are stricken with an illness and your only hope of being cured is therapeutic cloning, will you go for it? Why?"

Yes, I will encourage my loved ones or even myself to go for it. To live or to die, one has to choose either one. If one chooses to live, one has to definitely choose therapeutic cloning since this is the only hope to be cured.

Personally, I feel that therapeutic cloning is not so terrifying. It just involves duplicating a healthy copy of a sick person's tissues or organ for transplant. The damages therapeutic cloning inflict is not as serious as that of human cloning. It does not really go against human rights since it is just a stem cell research.

If one chooses to live, he has to forgone certain things. One example is one's religion. If one is a strong Catholic believer, he has to weigh the benefits and disadvantages that therapeutic cloning can give and cause. Note: Catholicism are against therapeutic cloning.

But for me, I will ask :"Why give up your life just to hold on to your belief (religion)? Shouldn't one be flexible?"

I am fortunate. My religion is Budddhism and Buddhism supports therapeutic cloning. Though embryonic stem-cell research is a murder in the eyes of Buddhiists, that only applies to destroying 'excess' embryos. However, if the research is conducted on already-aborted embryos with the good intention of finding cures for diseases, it is permissible. In other words, to what extent Buddhism supports therapeutic cloning, mainly depends on the doer's intention. Since me or my loved ones are stricken with illness and that our only hope of being cured is therapeutic cloning, and that our religion, Buddhism, supports this type of cloning, we will therefore go for it.

Another reason for my advocation is that Singapore itself, supports therapeutic cloning. The benefits of therapeutic cloning is that the stem cells can be turn into nerve cells, heart-muscle cells, pancreas cell, blood cells and so on. It is hoped that these cells can be used to repair and renew activities of the damaged parts of the human body such as diseased brains, severed spinal cords, torn nerves or defective hearts. Thus since therapeutic cloning can bring about such great benefits to the suffering or sick people, and can advance science into a new era, I see no reason in not supporting therapeutic cloning.

There are no doubts that therapeutic cloning may cause conflicts to arise. UN has already banned this type of cloning using human embryos. However there are still countries like USA which totally ban both therapeutic and human cloning and strongly emphasize on total ban on both the latter clonings. This is because they consider embyos as human and feel that these embryos deserve respect. They claim that pro-lifers ignore the pain of the living for the sake of some embryo. Moreover, there are come religions like Catholicism and Protestantism which do not support cloning. The followers of these religion commented that therapeutic cloning which involves embryonic stem-cell research - like abortion, which requires the culling of embyros - is morally unacceptable.

Richard Nicholson of the British Bulletin of Medical Ethics has once said that cloning research may well be ‘sowing the seeds of our destruction.’ I disagree with his statement. Till now, there is no concrete evidence of the tremendous harm therapeutic cloning using stem cells can inflict.

Therefore, if me or my loved ones are stricken with an illness and my only hope of being cured is therapeutic cloning, I will still go for it.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://looneychoony.blogspot.com/2005/05/if-you-or-your-loved-ones-are-stricken.html' title='"If you or your loved ones are stricken with an illness and your only hope of being cured is therapeutic cloning, will you go for it? Why or why not?

Yes, I will still buy products that contain GM foods for consumption by my family members.

Again, as mentioned in the earlier blog, there are many potential benefits in a consumer perspective. Medicines and vaccines are costly to produce. With edible vaccines developed in tomatoes and potatoes, these vaccines will be much easier to ship, store and administer than traditional injectable vaccines. This means that we can get our vaccines for certain disesses much easier and cheaper.

GM crops are herbicide and insect resistant. This means that the food we eat are safer and will most probably not contain anymore pesticides or herbicides that will endanger our health and lives. We will also not find any insects wriggling out from the fruits that will disgust us and make us puke. Therefore GM foods provide another alternative to people who are more health conscious.

Most importantly, my family has been eating GM food for the past few years and we are still fit and well. Though there are articles that say that toxins are found in mice after eating GM potatoes, to replace human beings with mices is not a very good or reliable method iin proving whether GM food is harmful. However, if we have to use laboratory animals as gauges, there are still experiments that can prove that GM food have no harmful effects. One example is the experiment on the GM peas where the nutritional value of diets containing GM peas expressing bean alpha-amylase inhibitor when fed to rats for ten days at two different (30% or 60%) dietary inclusions, was shown to be similar to that of parent-line peas. Thus this shows that GM foods are safe and hence its product should be safe.

Therefore, I will still buy the products that contain GM foods for consumption by my family due to the above reasons.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://looneychoony.blogspot.com/2005/05/would-you-buy-products-that-contain-gm.html' title='Would you buy products that contain GM foods for consumption by your family? Why or why not?

Yes, I will support the use of GM crops.

As consumers, we will tend to benefit. Medicines and vaccines often are costly to produce and sometimes require special storage conditions which may not be readily available in third world countries. If edible vaccines are developed in tomatoes and potatoes, the vaccines will be much easier to ship, store, and administer than traditional injectable vaccines. One example is the GM rice plants where they can produce the hepatitis antibody, which can be used to produce immunity to the virus(as reported by The Daily Yomiuri). As rice is a necessity to Asians, the production of GM rice can help reduce the costs of producing medicine or vaccines. The money which is to be used in production of medicines initially can then be channelled and used in other areas.

In religious point of view, GM crops are halal. This has been determined by the Islamic Jurisprudence Council (IJC). Though there is still discussion about the position of crops into which DNA from forbidden foods has been incorporated, all biotechnology derived foods on the market are from approved sources. The IJC position is supported by the Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America (IFANCA), and the IFANCA certification is accepted by Islamic organisations in Indonesia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia. So, for Muslims, they should have no fear for any GM food. As for other religions, use of GM foods may not be a big problem. Since the Buddhist, Hindus and Sikh support stem cell research, they should also be advocating GM food, which is also a product of ES cell research.

Moreover, if I am one of the decision maker in a third country, I will definitely support the use of GM crops because one of the major problem that I as a decision maker must solve is malnutrition. Since GM food can produce greater yield, which means that farmers can produce more fom the same area of land, and also provide certain vitamins that my people lack, I see no reason in not supporting GM food. Furthermore, GM crops are herbicide tolerant and insect resistant. They can offer farmers simpler control of otherwise difficult to control related weeds and huge environmental benefits as farmers move to low or zero ploughing. This protects soil biodiversity, helps reduce energy use and CO2 emissions.

Though there are debates that GM crops are harmful to human health such that they can cause allergenicity and other unknown effects, the benifits of GM crops are a wholesome that as a decision maker in the counrty, I will not resist the use of GM food.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://looneychoony.blogspot.com/2005/05/as-one-of-countrys-decision-makers.html' title='As one of the country's decision makers, would you advocate the use of GM crops? Many people see aborton as a sin which cannot be condone as abortion is more than murdering someone. Abortion is like taking a helpless life away, even before the foetus can survive on its own. However, generally, I am not against abortion.

There are several reasons behind my stand. Firstly, we must know that normal human beings have conscience. They know how to think. They know what is right and wrong and what is good and bad for them. As abortion is a serious matter, it is important to think over and over again on whether their decisions made is correct. Human beings have feelings. No one will like to kill their own children. It must have been something big or serious that force them to do so. Since abortion is the most inhumane way of killing someone, the sense of guilt they feel before or after abortion has already shown us that they have conscience. Imagine a woman who is in the operating theatre, going to abort the foetus. Just as the surgeon is going to anaesthetize her, she jumps out from the bed and decides not to abort the foetus. This could have shown that she has struggled a lot before coming to this decision. I will not be against her even if she later on decides or that her final decision is to abort the foetus. Thus i am not against abortion as normal human beings must have think from all aspects before they can come up upon this decision.

Social factor is another reason. In United States of America, bearing a child before one is married and raising it single-handedly is nothing big to fuss about. However this may not be the case in certain countries. Having a child before one is married is condemned in certain countries, especially conservative ones. One will be looked down by her other villagers if they know that she is pregnant before she is married. They will tend to classify her as an unfaithful person, giving away her chastity before her nuptical. This problem can be resloved if the man and the pregnant lady proceeds with their wedding. However, if the woman is pregnant and that she cannot finds the man or that the man had run away without bearing any responsibility, in that conservative society of hers, the best choice may be to abort the child. If this child is being born to earth, he will have to face the humiliation due to his mother's deed. Why let a child suffer for what the adults did?

Looking into other cases like pregnation due to rape, abortion may be the best choice. This life will only serve as a reminder of the ordeal and torment. If the life is to be shown no love, then why should it be born? Should it be born to suffer?

Lastly, economic factor is one of my reasons why i am not against abortion. In exterme cases like poverty, I may recommend abortion as it frees one from an extra financial burden. If one cannot feed herself, how is she able to feed her child? In Africa, many mothers still bore their children despite of poverty. However, poverty can kill a child even before he reaches the age of six. You watch him live till his bones are going to protrude out of his meat, and then watch him die. Is it fun to see him suffer like this? Again, is it fun to let him suffer with you? One may think of sending the child for adoption but why should one bore him if one does not want to foot the responsibility as a mother? What rights have one got to let the child suffer in agony later on if he knows he is being abandoned?

However in some cases or situations, i think that abortion is not a solution. For Roman Catholics, because of religious purposes, abortion is advised against. They believe that abortion is taking away part of God's creation. If a Roman Catholic aborts her child, she is deemed as disrespecting God or defying God's order. She will be chastised by her priest. Perhaps in this case, what she can do is to send her child away for adoption.

In another case where one has the financial ability to raise a child but wants to abort it just for the reason of unplanned pregnancy, I will think that abortion is not a very good solution to the problem. Is unplanned pregnancy something big enough to force one to go for abortion? One is not in extreme cases like poverty. Moreover, one has the financial ability to bring a child up. Worse still, if one has the financial ability to buy a car or to raise a pet, why not a child?

In conclusion, i am not really against abortion as i feel that the idea of abortion depends on the situations one faces. Most importantly, no matter what the choices are, it still lies in the hands of the mother.

"In the modern world, image is everything." Discuss.

Image is the representation of an object or a person. It is the first thing others can see on one. Image is like beauty, the outer beauty that people see on one. It is subjective. Especially in the modern world, how one perceives another is usually due to the image one portrays. Thus I agree that in the modern world, image is everything to a big extent.

Image can help one to judge a person. It presents what kind of person oneself is. As we know, 'first impression lasts'. People usually measure one by his image. How well one presents oneself can leave an everlasting effect or impression to another. For example, if one goes for an interview sloppily, with unkempt hair and shirt all creased up, his boss will have a bad impression on him. He may think that that person is lazy and untidy and hence, his work wil also be as messy as him. In the end, he probably may not get into the next round of interview and perhaps, a high probability of not being appointed a post.

Image can affect one's choice. When people look at things, it is natural that they always start by looking at the package, at how the object is presented to them. Usually, when we buy a gift for someone, we will see whether the object is pretty before thinking whether it is useful or not. This has already shown that image is a deciding factor to one's choice. Another example is the size of the person. In the modern world today, beanpole woman is seen as intelligent while plump women are often discriminated as they are viewed to be less intelligent than average. Thus slim woman tend to get a higher chance of a better job than plump women. In work or interview, these scenarios can often be seen. Thus most people perceive slimness as a way to be accepted and obesity as a stigma in society. Hence this shows that image affects one's choice.

So why in olden days, image may not be everything? Perhaps people then believe more in one's capabilities than image(though we cannot dey that during Victorian times, plumpness is viewed as attractive). People then were poorer and more practical. They know that one's intelligence is shown through one's hardwork and capabilities, not just through image. In the long Chinese drama serial 'Walking Out", it showed that though those so-called 'bao fa hu' (people who stroke rich just by selling land left to them by their ancestors) stroke rich by selling land, changing their image and identity immediately, it was not until a while that they had spent away every dollars and cents which can last their descendents for decades, hence changing their identity and image back to one again. This shows that how good one's image is, is not everything in those days. Probably to them, hardwork is then everything.

Though image is everything in the modern world, we cannot judge a book by its cover. Image is no quality in things themselves. It merely exists in the mind which contemplates them. Image is the outer beauty one can see, but it may not reflect the inner beauty of the person. In other words, what is out may not be what is within us. This is because looks can be deceiving. A person who is beautiful may not be that clever than a person with an average look but is brainy. Hence lesser emphasis should be place on image.

Nevertheless, image is everything to a big extent in this modern world. Superficial as image can be, it usually helps one to judge others, affects one's choice and can also in turn affect relationships between people.

"There are no permanent friends, only permanent interests."Comment.

I do not agree with this statement. Friendship is made not because for one's interest. We make friends because we want to find a person to share happiness with us or to talk to whenever we have any sorrows. We make friends to reflect upon ourselves, to find the real soul in us.

I disagree that there are no permanent friends in our life. Though friends may be just passer-bys in our life route, they are the ones who have great impacts on us. They bring us joy and laughter, sorrows and sadness, most, in our everday's life. Have you ever been teased by your friends?Or have your friends ever told you a joke that made you laugh till you face went red? Whether the answer is yes or no, it does not make a difference because whatever memories we have with them will forever be etched in our minds. They will thus be our 'permanent' friends. There are still certain cases where there are really permanent friends that walk one along the life. Our parents and siblings, are life examples. They have been with us since our births.Usually we will say out or tell our troubles to our kin ones and they will always be the ones there to support us. Furthermore, with their guidance we can at all times reflect upon our actions. From the above examples, our kin ones can already be seen as friends to us.

I, myself, have one example. I am still in contact with my primary school friends and teachers. They have since been one of my support holding me on till now. Whatever great or sad things I have, I will tell them and ask for opinions and suggestions, vice versa. I would rather say that they are my permanent friends, friends that are worthy of, than to say that our friendship is due to each other's permanent interest that we are able to earn from.

I have no doubts that some people make friends for one's permanent interest. They use friends to gain votes for sympathy, or even their friends' innocence to sabotage others. However, how long can one make friends for permanent gains? Friends pass by and go every now and then. No matter how many friends one makes, will one be able to gain any permanent interests from each friend? Perhaps, permanent interests in this lifetime, yes. But when these friends know that one is using them for interest sake while they treated him as a true friend, he will then get neither permanent interests nor permanent friends in his lifetime. Therefore, in such cases, I feel that these people will get either temporary interests or no interest.

Amazingly, in other cases, these so-called friends made use of each other to gain interests. However they can still be friends for life. Though they can attain both permanent friends and interests, their friendship may be fake.

Friendship is pure when we treat each other truefully and think nothing about interests. Though I feel that friendship should not be made for one's interest, there are still people in the world who think that friends should be made use of. What I can say is when one is trueful to another friend, one is then worthy enough to be another's friend. Don't you think so?

Should the education system allow exceptionally bright students to skip grades?

I refer to DR Lee Siew Peng's letter, 'Bringing Up Child Pridogies Good reasons not to allow grade-skipping' (ST, SEPT 25).

I agree most with what DR Lee said. I feel that students or children should be given the freedom to develop laterally rather than accelerate through the grades. If the student has potential, it is important to groom him. However, being just a child, wouldn't it be too cruel to deprive him of his childhood or teenagehood, by skipping grades and answering tougher questions than what suits his age, when other students are enjoying themselves at his age? Would you confirm that he will get a good job or excel extremely well in future? Moreover, though the child has high IQ, he may be weaker in certain aspects, like for example, social skills, which DR Lee's child lacks, as mentioned in the letter.

Therefore it is important to engage the child in an all-rounded development. Though we should allow those high IQ students progress at their own pace, I feel that these students should be held back from skipping grades and continue retaining at the level of education that suits their age. In this way, I think it may be better as parents will have little chance in pressurising their children too much in academic area. By mixing with other students of different IQ levels, these students will learn how to care and share for their peers rather than just thinking of competing with other high IQ students. They are able to be exposed to different environments instead of mainly the academic area. For example, someone of lower IQ may be better than this higher IQ child in swimming. This may be able to inspire and motivate the higher IQ child to excel well in sports too, hence diversifying the interests of the child. In this way he can be all-rounded and better-developed in both the academic and sports areas in the normal education system, instead of just focusing on academic area in the 'grade-skipping' system.

Some very high IQ children may be weaker in certian aspects or skills. Those skills which the child lacks should instead be polished up during their growing period. By skipping grades, it means that these children may have to leave these skills unattended or unpolished until when they step into the society later on, as they have to focus on their studies most of the time (childhood & teenagehood). Not learning these skills will be a disadvantage to them. So what if they are brilliant but have no sense of social ettiqutte? They will still be looked down upon. It is usually easier to teach the correct manner and lead one into the correct direction when one is young. By allowing one's child to skip grades, it may just show that the parents are more concern over results than moral values. These students may one day be influenced by their parents, thinking that achieving good results is the most important thing, compared to other subjects like moral values, in life. No doubt that some very high IQ students are more mature as mentioned in MDM Lee Ee Sa's letter, 'Yes, let precocious kids proceed at faster pace' (ST, SEPT 25). But will all very high IQ kids be as sensible or also have very high EQ?

I agree that in the past, students were allowed to skip grades. During my primary school period, one of my classmates was allowed to skip grade or change stream to go into the Gifted Elective Programme (GEP). However she rejected both and stayed on with us. In the end she still got 4A* in PSLE and all 'A's in 'O' levels. Moreover she excels well in sports and arts too. This shows that one does not need to skip grades to accelerate well in grades and other arenas. in rebutt to Mr Thomas Anthony (ST, SEPT 25).

In short it is better to let them develop on their own instead of developing these high IQ students through skipping grades. If the parents really think their children are highly intellectual, more advanced than their peers and can do it, perhaps the extreme I think they can go is to send them to the Gifted Elective Programme (GEP) where the children will still be able to work on challenging questions that can intrigue them.

Should marriage be a legal contract between individuals or a non-binding relationship based on love? Why?

Being single does not mean one is lonely. Being single may be due to the hectic schedule one faces everyday. These singles may be too busy with their work that they hardly have any time to socialize. However, not all singles are socially disadvantaged. By maintaining a single status, one has a little more freedom compared to those who are married. For example, singles have less restrictions in making friends.

Responding to the 5-day work week, singles now can spend more time socializing. Through dancing lessons, pubbing or perhaps through 'Find your soul', a matchmaking programme held by MCDS, singles can be more socially enriched.

Most singles will not have any financial problems. Due to the savings they accumulated over the years in the working society, it is enough to support themselves for a few years. Probably, this may only affect those singles who have just stepped into the working society.

Married couples does not necessarily mean they are more lonely than singles. They can also find time for themselves despite their hectic schedule. They can still engage in activities enjoyed by youngsters and singles even after they are married. For those who have children, they can put their children in the care of their parents' hands during certain weekends when they want to have their personal time together. However, though married couples can also be active by engaging themselves in enriching and exciting programmes they could have enjoyed before they were married, their social lives will somehow be restricted. This is because, for a person who is married and especially for one who has children, he or she will need to commit more time with his or her family members.

Whether married couples have more savings than singles will depend on how much assets they got and whether they have any children. For example, if a couple stays in a condomedium, we can be sure that they may be earning high salaries. But having to pay for all the installments, their savings will be greatly reduced. Moreover, if they have a child, their savings will definitely be lesser than before as expenses like education, food and clothing, spent on the child will be very big. This is different for singles. Most singles tend to live with their parents. Expenses that elderly spent will be much less than a child. And if we assume that the salary the single receives similarises the amount receive by the married couples, tha savings the single has will be much more.

Frankly speaking, the legal contract does not ensure that people stay married. As long as people think their marriage is beyond saving, this legal contract can be broken by signing a legal seperation contract. Though one straits time article(ST, 26 June) states that women were more reluctant to file for divorce, and couples here seems more likely to hang on to a troubled marriage tha Westerners, another article (ST, 5 July) contradicts it by having a comment which says that these days, people suscribe to the Western notion that if one is not happy, one should not hesitate to get a divorce.

Before the late 20th century, women had few economic opportunities. Men in the marriage would control most of the economic resources and custody were often granted to them. Many women found themslves tied to a marriage that gave them few rights and options within the marriage, and many obstacles to ending the marriage. Today, women have the right to ask fo divorce. Thanks to the liberised divorce law! Other than the change in law, women now are better off economically. They are able to support themselves. And because they are more likely to be beter off economically, they do not automatically lose custody of their children. Thus women are more ready to walk out of a failed marriage.

Today, more and more people view marriage as a non-binding relationship based on love. They feel that as long as they are in love with each other, it doesn't matter whether they are married. Human beings can be fickle minded when it comes to love. A person can be unfaithful to his or her partner even after a marriage. Thus there is no point staying in the marriage when one does not love another anymore. It will be very miserable for both paries to hang on just because of a legal contract.

To me, love does not last forever. People fall in and out of love everyday. Love is a mutual interdependence thing. Love between each other depends on how much one is willing to commit and sacrifice in this relationship. Perhaps, love can be everlasting but everlasting love is hard to achieve.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://looneychoony.blogspot.com/2004/09/should-marriage-be-legal-contract.html' title='Should marriage be a legal contract between individuals or a non-binding relationship based on love? Through advertising, advertisers can pass the messages they want straight away. These can be done through a few sources like telivision, radio and internet, etc.

Advertisements normally work well due to a few points. The main point is its simplicity, As advertisements are mostly short and simple, consumers can easily comprehend them. Secondly is its marketing strategies. Advertisers will only display the good side of the product. Not many will like to display both sides of their product as this may send customers away. Thus only by displaying the good side of the product can advertisers attract consumers. Lastly, advertisements work well due to the promotions and reduced prices shown in the advertisements. One example is the Kenya Airflights. In order to increase the company's sales of air tickets, it provides a complementary package. For air tickets bought in this package, the airflight company will provide hotel accomodation at discounted prices for the consumers at their destination. Mesmerised by these attractions, people will flock down to the company or shops to buy the products. Moreover, there may be a time limit for these attractions. Thus people will have to act fast before the promotion ends.

However in some cases, it is neither a matter of time nor any attractions that hypnotised the consumers. The problem is with them. When there are advertisements of slimming centres or slimming pills, this group of people will feel inferior of their own bodies. They will feel that they are fat, but frankly speaking, they are fit. Thus in order to be come slimmer, these people will respond to the advertisements. Sometimes people may point out that this type of advertisement may be misleading. Yes they may be misleading but the main problem is their psychological problem. Have they overcome it?One example is the Slim 10 Case. In order to look better on screen, Andrea De Cruz ate the slimming pills despite having look slim.

For some companies, money spent in advertising may be worth it. Advertisement is likely to publicise the company's name and help promote its product. One example is RAINBOW, a shop which specialises in breeding and selling fishes. It has advertised itself such that it has made itself known in Singapore. However, whether the money spent on advertising is worth it may be greatly dependent on its sales after advertising. If sales is good, the company may be able to cover its costs. Total cost of advertisement will be able to spread over a large area. But in certain cases, sales cannot be used as a support of whether money spent on advertising is worth it. One example is the slim 10 case. Although the plls were selling hot then, health hazards from eating its pills were later identified. Slim 10's pills contain fenfluramine, a poison that was not listed on the list of ingredients. Those women who were healthy but took the pills for vanity, suffered liver failure and hypertension. this resulted in a battle of court cases. In the end the company, TV Media, that helped to advertise the product, was also sued and was asked to pay a huge amount of money to its plaintiff. At the end of the day the company had also made a loss.

Not all unsolicited advertisements should be banned. The term "unsolicited advertisement" means unrequested advertisement. if all unsolicited materials are banned, then we will not know where we can get product or food that are selling at the most cheap or economical price. However advertisements like the Slim 10 pills should be banned as it provides untrustworthy reports and evidence. For example, Chen Liping, the artise celebrity spokeman for the product, did not feel anything wrong after eating the pills for weeks. On the other hand, Andrea De Cruz suffered from liver damage after eating the pills. Hence unsolicited advertisements with false claims and that could harm the public should be banned.

I think the government should impose stricter laws on advertisements. For example, advertisements within the printed products cannot contain price ranges. This is to safeguard the accuracy of the information within the directory because those items are often subjected to change. Discount offers are acceptable if they are not in connect with a price and are stated in isolation. Cashback offers should also be restricted as such offers are quite complicated and may not be possible to fulfil and can also mislead users

What is one value or belief that you hold onto in life?

One value that I have been holding onto in life is to have confidence in everything I do. Confidence reflects one"s character. A person without confidence is least likely to succeed in life. This is because he is unable to overcome himself pychologically, let alone overcoming obstalcles that he will be facing. In a nutshell, I am trying to say that a person without confidence is most likely to fail in whatever he does.

Ignoring whether I have prepared and studied hard enough or not, I will always step into the examination hall confidently for every test and examination. With confidence, half the battle is won. For me, confidence drives determination. It also gives me the support I need whenever I meet with problems e.g. a difficult examination question. Hence, confidence makes me perservere to the end in whatever I do.

One good example to illustrate my belief is through this song "I believe I can fly" by R Kelly. This song is very meaningful as it tells us to believe, to be confident in whatever we do. I believe I can fly. I believe I can touch the sky. I think about it every night and then. Spread my wings and fly away. Basically, I rather like the chorus towards the end of the song. If anyone has noticed, it goes like this 'Cus I believe in me. If I can see it, I can do it.

Therefore, having confidence in everything I do is one belief that I will continue holding onto in life. Without confidence, one's life will be dull.
